Projects

The Institute initiates projects and responds to requests for technical assistance. Each project is tailored to meet the specific situation and needs of the people involved, and may range from short consultations to one-time meetings to multi-year negotiations. Ravalli County Zoning

In response to a citizen initiative calling for land-use zoning, Ravalli County Commissioners asked the Institute and Clarion Associates (a national planning firm) to facilitate a multi-party public process to create the first zoning code in this fast growing valley.

Regional Planning in Winnipeg

After completing a regional visioning process, the Capital Region Partnership invited the Institute – in partnership with the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy – to help citizens, experts, and officials transform the regional vision into practical policies, programs, and actions on-the-ground.

 

Crown of the Continent

In partnership with the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, the Institute is developing a network among public, private, and non-governmental organizations to promote and support regional resource management and community stewardship in this international ecosystem.

 

Community-based Collaboration in the Ninemile Valley

During the fall of 2007, nine students affiliated with the Natural Resources Conflict Resolution Program assessed the past, present, and future of this small, rural, and fast-changing community outside Missoula.

Regional Governance in Ada County, Idaho

Boise, Ada County, IdahoWorking with the Urban Land Institute, the Institute evaluated alternative arrangements to govern land use, transportation, and quality of life for the Boise, Idaho region.

Calgary Regional Land-use Plan

In the face of unprecedented growth and development, the Institute was asked by the Calgary Regional Partnership to help facilitate and inform a multiparty negotiation to establish Terms of Agreement for Working Together to Create a Regional Land-use Plan.

Public Land and Resources Law

The Institute works in partnership with the Public Land Law Program the University of Montana’s School of Law to provide professional opportunities for law students; convene educational programs for practicing lawyers, policy makers, and the public; and inform and invigorate public land policy.
